I wrote all creditors about a recent problem with my credit profile. My credit data is crossed with my father’s information because we have the same address and name. Our birthdates, social insurance numbers and middle names are different. I would like to know how this information has gotten mixed up and how long it will take to fix. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your email. The credit reporting industry keeps updated records on millions of Canadians so it is not too hard to see why they occasionally get mixed up. Your situation typically occurs when the distinguishing details (e.g. date of birth) to separate your information from your father’s information is not reported on a monthly update of your accounts. The credit reporting agency should be able to get the information sorted in the correct profiles fairly soon.

After the credit reporting agencies receive your dispute letters they will investigate the problem and make corrections. To ensure that the errors are worked out, order a new copy of your credit profile to review the changes. If you identify any further inaccuracies, notify the credit reporting agency to get everything in order.
